How wedding days run in San Diego

Across the county, most weddings we photograph take one of three shapes: a full day on a North County estate, a shorter evening at a waterfront venue, or a coastal ceremony with the reception somewhere else. Each is a composite of real timelines, rounded to the quarter hour.

North County estate, all on one property

Garden and vineyard estates in Fallbrook, San Marcos and Escondido, with suites for getting ready on site.
  • 1:00 PMCoverage begins with details and getting ready in the estate suites.
  • 2:15 PMFirst look, couple portraits in the gardens, then wedding party and family photos.
  • 3:30 PMYou are tucked away while guests arrive and the ceremony site is photographed.
  • 4:30 PMCeremony in the garden, under the trees or by the water.
  • 5:00 PMCocktail hour. Remaining family groups and a short portrait walk around the grounds.
  • 6:30 PMGrand entrance, welcome and dinner.
  • 7:15 PMToasts, first dance and cake, then open dancing.
  • 9:45 PMLast dance, and a send-off for couples who plan one.

Waterfront hotel or club, evening only

Getting ready, ceremony and reception in one place on the bay or the coast, with a later start.

  • 4:45 PMGuests arrive. The ceremony setup is photographed while it is still empty.

Coastal ceremony, reception at a second venue

A ceremony at a cove, park or bayside site in the city, then a short drive to the reception.

What shapes a wedding day in San Diego

Patterns from the San Diego weddings we photograph, whichever venue on this page you choose.

CoverageMost San Diego weddings we photograph book seven to eight hours of coverage (about 45%), and about 30% book five to six. Estate days tend toward the longer end, since everything from getting ready to dancing happens on one property.
First lookAbout 60% of the San Diego weddings we photograph include a first look. On an estate it usually happens in the gardens in the early afternoon, so family photos are done before guests arrive.
Guest countMost guest lists we photograph here fall between about 75 and 140 guests, with 100 the most typical. It is worth confirming how each venue sets up for your number before comparing them.
Ceremony timeNorth County estates most often hold the ceremony between 4:00 and 5:00 PM. Waterfront hotels and clubs often start a little later, around 5:30 PM, with getting ready in the late afternoon.
Church ceremoniesAbout 10% of the San Diego weddings we photograph include a church ceremony or Mass. These usually start between late morning and early afternoon, with the reception elsewhere in the evening. We confirm each parish's photography guidelines ahead of time.
Two locationsWhen the ceremony and reception are in different places, family photos happen at the ceremony site before anyone leaves, and wedding party photos can wait until you arrive at the reception.
