What the County actually offers, how the appointment works, and how to make twenty minutes look like a wedding day

WHERE IT HAPPENS

Four offices, and one building worth photographing.

San Diego County civil ceremonies are performed by the County Clerk at four locations: the County Administration Center downtown, and the Chula Vista, San Marcos and Santee offices. They are all functional; only one of them is beautiful.

The County Administration Center on the waterfront is a 1930s civic building with a tiled entrance, deep arches and a great deal of stone — the kind of architecture that photographs like a landmark rather than an office. If the pictures matter to you at all, book there.

Appointments are required, they open roughly seven weeks ahead, and they fill quickly. Book the ceremony slot before you book anything else, including us.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The rules that shape the day.

01

Licence first

A valid marriage licence must be purchased before the ceremony. San Diego County lists $129 for a public licence and $144 for a confidential one, valid for 90 days with no extensions.

02

Appointment required

Ceremonies are by appointment only, bookable up to about seven weeks in advance. Popular dates go quickly, and there is no walk-up alternative for the indoor rooms.

03

Guest limits

Indoor ceremonies at the County Administration Center allow roughly 20 to 30 guests; the Chula Vista, San Marcos and Santee offices allow 15 to 20. Outdoor ceremonies have no stated guest limit but depend on availability.

Those three facts decide the shape of the day more than anything a photographer does. A confirmed appointment, a licence in hand and a guest count under the cap is a calm morning; any one of them missing is not.

HOW WE SHOOT IT

Twenty minutes inside, and the rest of the city outside.

The ceremony is short

Civil ceremonies run a few minutes. We work quietly and close, because there is no processional to cover and no second take — the vows, the ring, the kiss and the signatures are the whole thing.

Then use the building

The arches, the tilework and the stone stairs give you a set of portraits that look nothing like an office. Fifteen minutes after the ceremony is usually enough.

And then use the water

The Administration Center sits on the waterfront with the bay, the palms and the Embarcadero a short walk away. Most couples we photograph here end up spending longer outside than in.

Make a day of it

Courthouse mornings pair well with an afternoon somewhere that means something — a restaurant, a rooftop, the coast at Coronado. We build the timeline around that rather than stopping at the door.

QUESTIONS

Before you book the slot.

Where are San Diego County civil ceremonies performed?

At four County Clerk locations: the County Administration Center downtown, plus the Chula Vista, San Marcos and Santee offices. The Administration Center is by far the most photogenic.

Do we need an appointment?

Yes. Appointments are required and open roughly seven weeks in advance. The county notes that they fill up quickly, so book the ceremony before anything else.

How many guests can we bring?

Indoor ceremonies at the County Administration Center allow about 20 to 30 guests; the other three offices allow about 15 to 20. Outdoor ceremonies have no stated limit but are subject to availability.

What does the marriage licence cost and how long is it valid?

San Diego County lists $129 for a public licence and $144 for a confidential licence. Both are valid for 90 days with no extensions, and must be purchased before the ceremony.

Can you photograph inside the ceremony room?

The county’s published guidance does not address photography, so we confirm with the clerk on the day and work within whatever they ask. In practice we plan for a short, quiet coverage inside and a full portrait session outside.

How long should we book you for?

Two hours covers the ceremony, portraits in and around the building and a short walk to the waterfront. Longer if you are continuing to a lunch or a second location.
