Getting married in Malibu

Malibu offers Southern California’s full range of wedding backdrops inside a single stretch of coast — Pacific-front sand and bluffs, chaparral canyons in the Santa Monica Mountains, and hidden hillside vineyards and olive groves. The light here is the reason it is one of the most photographed wedding destinations in the country: long, warm and low, bouncing off the water for the last hour of every clear day.

Whether you picture bare feet on the sand, a rustic ranch under the oaks, or a sunset vineyard high above the ocean, Malibu delivers — and we build the day around whichever of those three you have chosen, because they behave completely differently on camera.

Local knowledge

What we know about shooting here

Three things that change how a Malibu day is shot.

PCH is the timeline

Getting ready in town and marrying up the coast can be forty minutes each way on a Saturday afternoon. We plan travel as real time on the schedule rather than a rounding error, and we scout the turn-offs so nobody is hunting for a driveway in a wedding dress.

Three landscapes, three approaches

Beach means wind and backlight. Canyon means deep shade under the oaks and a much earlier effective sunset. Vineyard means exposed hilltop and the best last light in the county. The plan changes completely depending on which you booked.

Public beaches are permitted ground

Ceremonies on public sand need permits, and some stretches are restricted outright. Private estate and venue beaches have their own rules. We confirm what applies to your specific spot before the day rather than finding out on it.

Malibu wedding photography FAQ

Do we need a permit for a Malibu beach ceremony?

If it is public sand, generally yes, and some stretches are closed to events entirely. Private estates and venue-owned beaches set their own rules. We confirm what applies to your exact spot before the date — it is the single most common thing couples get caught out by here.

How much travel time should we allow along PCH?

More than you think. Between a hotel in town and a venue up the coast, forty minutes each way on a Saturday afternoon is realistic. We put it on the timeline as real time so the portrait window does not get eaten.

Beach, canyon or vineyard — which photographs best?

They are genuinely different rather than better or worse. Vineyards give the biggest last light. Canyons under the oaks go dark early but give you deep, soft shade all afternoon. Beaches give backlight and wind. Tell us which you have booked and we will tell you how the day should run.

When is the best time of year?

September and October are the reliable months — warm, clear and long-lit. Spring is green but wetter. Mid-summer is beautiful late in the day but the middle of the afternoon is harsh on an exposed hilltop.

Can you add a videographer for a Malibu wedding?

Yes — one team for photo and film, including Malibu wedding videography and same-day edits.
