Getting married in Glendale
Glendale is where a very large share of Los Angeles weddings actually happen, and it gets written about far less than it should. The city holds one of the largest Armenian communities anywhere outside Armenia, which means the churches here are not incidental venues — they are the reason the day is in Glendale at all, and the ceremonies inside them run to a liturgy rather than a schedule.
Around those churches sit two things worth photographing: Brand Library and its park, a 1904 Saracenic-revival mansion built against the Verdugo foothills, and the hillside venues just over the Burbank line where the valley opens up at sunset. Both are ten to fifteen minutes from Downtown, which is why Glendale keeps absorbing weddings that were originally planned for the city.

We photographed a wedding here in June 2026 and it is a good example of why Armenian ceremonies need a photographer who knows the running order. The crowning and the common cup are the frames that matter and they arrive without announcement, well into an hour-long liturgy. We work from the side aisles without flash and stay put through the service rather than moving during it.

White domes, horseshoe arches and a colonnade that reads as Moorish rather than Californian — the single most distinctive portrait backdrop in the city, and a fifteen-minute drive straight across Mountain Street from St Gregory. It is a public park, so late afternoon on a weekend is busy, and the best frames are on the east side of the building once the sun drops behind the Verdugos.

Technically over the Burbank line, but it is the venue Glendale couples book most often and we have worked it many times. The draw is elevation: the ceremony terrace looks down over the whole valley, so sunset arrives as a wide horizon rather than a gap between buildings. Parking and the shuttle up the hill are the two logistics worth confirming early.

Armenian ceremonies run to a liturgy, not a clock
A full Armenian service runs about an hour and the photographic moments — the crowning, the shared cup, the blessing — are embedded in it rather than announced. We position before the service starts and stay there, because moving mid-liturgy is both disruptive and how the frame gets missed.
Brand Library is public, and the light comes late
The park is open to everyone and busy on weekend afternoons. It also sits directly against the Verdugo foothills, so the sun disappears behind the ridge earlier than the published sunset time. Build portraits for that shortened window rather than the one on your weather app.
You are ten minutes from Downtown
Glendale is close enough to Downtown LA that adding a city portrait stop costs about twenty minutes each way outside rush hour. For couples who wanted a Downtown wedding but not Downtown pricing, that is often the compromise that makes the day work.
