Santa Barbara Courthouse Wedding Photography

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse is one of the most photographed wedding backdrops in Southern California, and for good reason. Built in 1929 in Spanish-Moorish Revival style, the courthouse pairs whitewashed walls and red-tile roofs with hand-painted tile work, wrought-iron details, and the lush, palm-lined Sunken Garden at its center. As Lulan Studio wedding photographers, we love the mix of grand architecture and greenery — from the arched walkways and tiled staircases to the panoramic views from the Clock Tower.

Why Couples Love the Santa Barbara Courthouse

Couples are drawn to the courthouse for its unbeatable combination of history, architecture, and setting — all in the middle of downtown Santa Barbara. The Sunken Garden offers a wide, grassy ceremony space framed by palm trees and the courthouse’s iconic facade, while the Clock Tower observation deck delivers sweeping views of the city, the Santa Ynez Mountains, and the Pacific Ocean. It is also one of the few landmark wedding locations in the area that is open to the public at no cost for small ceremonies.

Getting Ready Near the Courthouse

Since the courthouse is a public landmark, most couples get ready nearby — often at a downtown Santa Barbara hotel or a rented suite within walking distance — and arrive dressed for photos. We are happy to recommend nearby getting-ready spaces with great natural light, and we can meet you there before heading over to the courthouse grounds for portraits and the ceremony.

Couple’s Session

The courthouse gives us more variety in one location than almost anywhere else in Santa Barbara. We love working the Sunken Garden’s palm-lined lawn, the tiled archways and staircases inside the building, and the Clock Tower observation deck for sweeping ocean-to-mountain views. Moving between these spots lets us capture a full range of looks — lush and garden-like, architectural and historic, and wide-open cityscape — all within a short walk.

Wedding Ceremony

Most courthouse ceremonies take place on the lawn of the Sunken Garden, with the whitewashed courthouse and its red-tile roofline as a backdrop, or inside the Mural Room for a more formal, historic setting. Both spots are popular for elopements and intimate ceremonies, and the courthouse’s public grounds mean the architecture and gardens are available to any couple with the right permit.

After the Ceremony

Because the courthouse is a public building, receptions are held off-site — many couples celebrate at a nearby restaurant, private estate, or downtown venue within a few minutes’ drive. We often build in time right after the ceremony for portraits around the Sunken Garden and Clock Tower before the group heads off to celebrate, so you get the courthouse backdrop without sacrificing reception time.
