About the venue

A Michael Graves-designed resort hotel

Opened in December 1989 as part of noted postmodern architect Michael Graves’ 1.2-million-square-foot Aventine complex, the Hyatt Regency La Jolla carries his signature custom furnishings and interiors throughout — recently refreshed in a 2020 renovation of the lobby, guest rooms, and meeting spaces. Eight event spaces span two ballrooms, a foyer, pool deck, and terrace, with 400 guest rooms on-site for out-of-town guests.

The glass-enclosed La Jolla Ballroom slides open onto a coastal-view terrace for up to 500 guests, while the 11,800-square-foot Regency Ballroom — the largest in the region — handles bigger receptions under 18-foot ceilings. The Regency Foyer’s suspended white-pebble art installation over an open staircase is a favorite for cocktail-hour portraits.

Getting ready and reception coverage, all in one hotel

We’ve worked here with outside coordinators like San Diego Life Events, who handle the vendor timeline and paperwork the hotel’s events team requires. It’s common for couples to get ready in the bridal suite on-site even when their ceremony is held elsewhere, then return for cocktail hour in the foyer and dinner in the ballroom — which is exactly the flow we build our coverage around.

Good to know before you book

  • Valet and self-parking are both paid, not complimentary
  • Certificates of insurance must name Hyatt Corporation as agent of the property owner
  • The wedding package includes a complimentary wedding-night suite
  • On-site restaurant SHOR is a popular rehearsal-dinner option

Where we like to shoot

  • The glass-enclosed La Jolla Ballroom opening to its terrace
  • The Regency Foyer, beneath its suspended pebble art installation
  • The hotel’s exterior staircase and Michael Graves-designed courtyards
  • Portraits by the pool deck at golden hour
What people say

What couples and guests notice about the Hyatt Regency La Jolla

The space

Reviewers repeatedly call the ballroom “huge, beautiful, and affordable” relative to comparable resort venues in the area.

The catering

Guests specifically mention the food months later — a standout compared to typical hotel-banquet fare.

The trade-off

Parking is the most consistent complaint; valet and self-park both carry separate daily fees.
