Mt. Woodson Castle Wedding Photographer

Tucked into the hills of Ramona in San Diego County, Mt. Woodson Castle is a 1921 stone castle built by dress designer Amy Strong — turrets, terraced gardens and rolling-hill views about forty minutes from downtown San Diego. As a San Diego wedding photographer, I love the fairy-tale contrast of hand-laid stone against soft California light.

A 1921 stone castle in the hills

The European-inspired Craftsman castle hosts one event per day, so the grounds feel entirely yours. Stone towers, garden terraces and a riverside setting give a ceremony real storybook atmosphere, while the surrounding hills open up for wide, golden-hour portraits.

How we photograph a Mt. Woodson wedding

We use the architecture early — portraits by the turret and along the terraced gardens — then chase the light up into the hills as the sun drops. The castle glows at dusk, so we save a few frames for after dark with the stonework lit up behind you.

Planning tip

Ramona sits inland and can run warm, so we plan the ceremony for the cooler, softer part of the afternoon and keep a shaded garden spot in our back pocket for family portraits.
