Wedding day etiquette · SpeechesTell the room who she really is
Maid of honor or matron of honor, the job is the same: show everyone the person you know, welcome the person she chose, and keep it short enough to land.
- LengthThree to five minutes
- Matron of honorSame role, married
- ToneWarm first, funny second
- FinishA toast to both
You have known her longer than almost anyone in the room. That is your advantage. Use it with one story.
A matron of honor is simply a married maid of honor; the speech, duties and etiquette are identical. Some couples have both, in which case they can share one speech or give two short ones.
The strongest maid of honor speeches are not lists of adjectives. They are a single memory that shows the bride or partner clearly, followed by an honest moment about the person they married.
How to build it, step by step
Introduce yourself
Your name and how you know her: sister, college roommate, best friend since second grade.
Set the scene
One line on what she was like when you met. It sets up the story.
Tell one story
A specific memory that shows who she is: brave, funny, the one who drove six hours to help you move.
Bring in the partner
When you first met them, the moment you knew, what they bring out in her.
Speak to them both
Turn to the couple for a sentence or two. This is where tears usually happen.
Raise the glass
Invite everyone to stand and toast both names.
Lines to make your own
Hi, everyone. I’m Claire, Emma’s best friend since we were assigned the same locker in seventh grade, which she immediately reorganised. She has been organising my life ever since.
When my car broke down at two in the morning, two hundred miles from home, I called one person. She answered on the first ring, said “send me your location”, and was there by dawn with coffee and a phone charger.
Jake, the first time I met you, you remembered how I take my coffee. That’s when I knew you were paying attention to the right things.
Please raise your glasses to the most dependable person I know, and the man who finally gets to look after her. To Emma and Jake.
Keep it kind and clear
Do
- Coordinate with the best man so you do not tell the same story.
- Mention her family warmly if they hosted.
- Hold the paper or cards at chest height, not in front of your face.
- Pause for laughs and tears.
Don’t
- Make it about your friendship more than about her.
- Use the speech to reveal secrets, even sweet ones.
- Rely on a phone screen.
- Forget the partner until the last line.

Look at her when you get to the sincere part. Not the room, not your notes: her. We will be on her face, and that is the photograph her mother orders three prints of.

Maid of honor speeches, answered
What is the difference between a maid of honor and a matron of honor?
A matron of honor is married; a maid of honor is not. The role and the speech are the same. Couples can have one of each, sharing or splitting the toast.
How long should a maid of honor speech be?
Three to five minutes, about 400 to 650 words. A two-minute speech that is heartfelt and specific is better than a long one.
Should the maid of honor speech be funny or emotional?
Both, ideally: a light story that shows who she is, followed by a sincere moment about the couple. Lead with warmth; use humour to support it.
Can two maids of honor give one speech together?
Yes. Split it into clear halves, rehearse the hand-off, and keep the total to five minutes so it does not feel like two full speeches.
