Not to be dramatic…but we love the drama! We had fun shooting here with our couples who want to stray from the norm. Inside this theater is a combination of Spanish Renaissance and Moorish styles, making it a venue for no simple wedding. Wedding photos that are similar to portraits in the Renaissance era? Amazing!

Tips

1.Lean into the drama — the plasterwork, gilded columns, and moody theater lighting create striking backdrops for portraits.

2.Plan your timeline to capture both natural daylight and the venue’s rich stage lighting after sunset — the two looks are dramatically different.

3. Use the venue’s multiple distinct spaces to your advantage — an intimate room for getting ready, the Main Theater for ceremony, and the Mezzanine for a livelier reception.

What Makes the Belasco Theater Photograph So Well

The Belasco is a 1926 downtown Los Angeles playhouse turned event venue, built in Spanish Renaissance and Moorish style with Churrigueresque plasterwork and a gilded domed ceiling. A wedding here borrows the theater's own drama - stage lighting, tiered balconies, and a ballroom washed in deep red and gold.

The spaces we plan portraits around

  • The Main Theatre - a real stage, production lighting, and a multi-tiered balcony; ceremonies read cinematic from the floor and epic from the balcony rail.
  • The 1926 Ballroom - reds, golds, and stained glass with its own Hill Street entrance; it photographs rich and moody rather than bright and airy, and we expose for that atmosphere.
  • The Vintage Bar and plasterwork details - carved ceilings, ornate walls, and lounge corners that make couple portraits feel like film stills between takes.

Timeline advice for the Belasco Theater

The Belasco is an interiors venue, so the day is built around designed light instead of the sun - which means the timeline is unusually flexible. We grab the marquee and facade at dusk for an exterior frame, coordinate with the lighting rig for ceremony and dance-floor looks, and always protect ten minutes for the couple alone on the empty stage under a single spotlight.
