Every parish sets its own rules. Knowing them before the processional is most of the job

THE CEREMONY

One faith,a lot of different services.

“A church wedding” covers a wide range of ceremonies, and the differences matter to how a day is photographed.

A Catholic nuptial Mass runs an hour or more, includes the liturgy of the Word and the Eucharist, and usually restricts where a photographer may stand. A Catholic ceremony without Mass is roughly half that. Protestant and non-denominational services are typically shorter and considerably more flexible, often with a unity candle, a sand ceremony or a hand-binding written into them. An Orthodox crowning has its own sequence entirely — the betrothal, the crowns, the common cup and the procession around the table.

Filipino Catholic weddings add the candle, veil, cord and coins inside the Mass; Hispanic and Mexican Catholic weddings add the lazo and the arras. We photograph all of these regularly — the candle, veil and cord guide covers those rites in detail.

THE PART EVERYONE FORGETS

Ask the parish first.Every single time.

No two churches set the same photography rules, and they are rarely published anywhere a couple would find them. These are the five that actually change the pictures.

01

Flash

Many parishes forbid it outright during the liturgy. We work fast lenses and high ISO by default so a no-flash rule changes nothing about what you get.

02

Where we may stand

Some churches keep photographers out of the sanctuary and the centre aisle entirely; others allow one position at the front. It decides every angle of the ceremony.

03

The Eucharist

Photography is often paused during communion. We plan for it rather than being surprised by it.

04

Time in the building

Many parishes run weddings back to back and clear the church quickly. Ask how long you have for family photographs at the altar afterwards.

05

Dress and conduct

Some parishes have expectations for vendors as well as guests. It costs nothing to ask and it avoids an awkward conversation on the day.

06

Second shooter

Where only one position is allowed at the front, a second photographer at the back is the difference between one angle and a ceremony that reads properly.

We contact the parish before every church wedding we shoot. If they have a coordinator, they usually have a sheet — and it is always more specific than what the couple was told.

QUESTIONS

Before you meet the priest.

How long is a Catholic wedding ceremony?

A full nuptial Mass usually runs an hour or more; a Catholic ceremony without Mass is roughly half that. Build the difference into your timeline before you set a reception start time.

Will the church let you use flash?

Many parishes do not permit it during the liturgy. We shoot available light as our default so the answer does not change what you receive.

Can you photograph from the altar?

It depends entirely on the parish. Some allow one position at the front, others keep photographers out of the sanctuary and the centre aisle. We ask in advance and plan the coverage around whatever they set.

Do you photograph the unity candle and other symbolic rites?

Yes — unity candles, sand ceremonies, hand-binding, the Filipino veil and cord, the Hispanic lazo and arras, and Orthodox crownings. Tell us which are in your service and we will cover them properly.

How much time do we get for photographs after the ceremony?

Ask the parish. Many run weddings back to back and clear the church within fifteen or twenty minutes, which decides how many family groupings are realistic at the altar.

Do you travel to churches outside Los Angeles?

Yes. We photograph parishes across Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego and the Inland Empire, and chapels in Las Vegas.
