A Mission Revival sanctuary built in 2011
St. Gabriel Catholic Church’s parish dates to 1973, but its current sanctuary is comparatively new: designed by Hyndman & Hyndman and dedicated in July 2011, a 26,000-square-foot Mission Revival building with carillon bells and a pipe organ. A newer addition, a landscaped olive grove called the Garden of Gethsemane, gives couples a softer, outdoor portrait option beyond the standard church-exterior shot.
The parish’s on-site Monsignor Dollen Hall — a 4,500-square-foot ballroom with wood floors, vaulted ceilings, and a lit outdoor patio — can host a reception, though most of the weddings we’ve photographed here use St. Gabriel for the ceremony only, with the reception at a separate venue nearby. Note: this is St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Poway, not Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in the city of San Gabriel — two unrelated buildings roughly a hundred miles apart.
Photographing a full Catholic Nuptial Mass
We’ve photographed a wedding here that ran the full traditional Nuptial Mass — about an hour of readings and ritual, not a short ceremony-only program — followed by a tight, roughly thirty-minute window for photos in and around the church before the space needed to clear for the next event. St. Gabriel’s wedding-preparation process requires photographers to sign a copy of the parish’s vendor guidelines in advance, so we always confirm the current photography rules with the couple’s coordinator before the day.
