About the venue

A 1926 oil-fortune estate turned city park

Built around 1926 as the vacation estate of oil pioneer William Warren Orcutt — credited with discovering the La Brea Tar Pits — the main residence blends Spanish Colonial and Mission Revival details, with glazed Mexican tile and carved Philippine mahogany. Once a 210-acre citrus ranch, the surviving 24 acres were designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1965 and are now run by the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks as a horticultural park.

The grounds hold a coast live oak measuring over 33 feet around and estimated at more than 700 years old, alongside rose gardens and citrus orchards. Couples can choose between a shaded courtyard near a sundial, a main courtyard with a white gazebo, or an Italian-style marble pergola for the ceremony.

Working a bring-your-own, city-run estate

We’ve shot here with coordinators like Creative Happens Events and 3 Little Birds Event Planning & Rentals, who both build in a mid-event “chair flip” between the ceremony courtyard and the reception patio. Orcutt Ranch is a largely bring-your-own rental — couples typically source their own catering, rentals, and décor — so we plan our shot list around a longer, more DIY setup window than a full-service venue.

Good to know before you book

  • A city permit process, with required security monitors and insurance
  • Couples typically supply their own catering, rentals, and décor
  • Amplified music is indoors only; acoustic only outdoors
  • Hard music curfew at 10pm

Where we like to shoot

What people say

What couples and guests notice about Orcutt Ranch

The setting

The historic architecture and mature gardens are consistently called romantic and photogenic enough to need little added décor.

The value

The rental fee is repeatedly described as low for an outdoor LA venue this size, and the bring-your-own policy keeps costs flexible.

The trade-off

It’s a bare rental with little indoor backup for rain, and midday sun can be strong with limited shade.
