The history behind El Cid
- The building operated as a jail-themed café in the 1920s and later as the Gateway Theatre (1932) and the Cabaret Concert Theatre (1950s).
- In December 1962, performers Juan Talavera, Margarita Cordova and Clark Allen reopened it as El Cid, remodeling the interior in the style of a 16th-century Spanish tavern.
- It has run as a flamenco tablao and live-event venue continuously since then, one of the oldest in Los Angeles.
