About the venue

A deconsecrated 1876 cathedral, reimagined as a blank canvas

Built in 1876 as the seat of the Diocese of Monterey–Los Angeles, the building served as a working cathedral for over 100 years, designed by architects Kysor & Mathews and named for a 3rd-century Roman martyr. Originally a 1,200-seat sanctuary, it suffered major damage in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, followed by a preservation fight and roughly $8 million restoration; its cupola was fully restored in 2007.

Today the space keeps its marble columns, 45-foot coffered ceilings, Palladian windows, and 83-foot bell tower, plus an Italian-inspired courtyard lined with olive trees. It’s now co-managed by Amy Knoll Fraser and Chef Neal Fraser, with bridal prep often taking place next door at sister restaurant Redbird’s “Bishop’s Perch.”

Working with Vibiana’s regular vendor circle

We’ve photographed both spring and summer weddings at Vibiana, coordinating with planners like 3 Little Birds Event Planning & Rentals and Mina Joo Events. Because it’s a bare-space rental, nearly everything — florals, rentals, lighting design — is brought in fresh for each wedding, which gives every gallery here a different feel despite the same architecture.

Good to know before you book

  • It’s a bare-space rental — the venue provides catering, bar, LED lighting, and sound; everything else is brought in
  • Music must end by 2:00am
  • Rice, confetti, glitter, sparklers, smoke machines, and fireworks are all prohibited
  • Add-ons like climate control, security, and permits stack onto the base rental

Where we like to shoot

  • The soaring marble columns and 45-foot coffered ceilings
  • The Palladian windows for directional daylight
  • The Italian-inspired courtyard with its olive trees
  • Wide shots up toward the restored dome and bell tower
What people say

What couples and guests notice about Vibiana

The grandeur

Widely called one of the most beautiful venues in California — the historic scale photographs well against downtown LA’s urban edge.

The food

In-house catering from Chef Neal Fraser is a consistent standout in reviews.

The fine print

Heavy rules and mandatory add-ons catch some couples off guard — worth budgeting for early rather than as a surprise.
