THE VENUE

Up the hill, and suddenly the whole valley.

Castaway sits on a ridge in the Verdugo hills above Burbank, at the top of a winding access road that does a lot of the work before anyone gets out of the car. The venue describes itself as having several banquet rooms with private reception areas and outdoor ceremony spaces, with views across the surrounding hills and the San Fernando Valley — and that is exactly what it is. There is a courtyard, there are terraces, and there is a view that runs west over the whole basin.

For photography that geography matters more than any room. The outlook faces the sunset. From roughly an hour before dusk the light comes in low and sideways across the terrace, the valley behind goes gold, and then — after dark — the entire grid lights up behind you. Very few Los Angeles venues give you both of those in the same evening without a drive.

HOW IT PHOTOGRAPHS

Two completely differenthalves of one night.

The outdoor half

Ceremony and cocktails happen with the hills behind. The light is warm, directional and falls fast, so we shoot portraits on a tight schedule rather than drifting — the difference between fifteen minutes early and fifteen minutes late here is the difference between gold and grey.

The view is a subject

We frame wide often, because the valley is the reason you chose the venue. Backlit against the ridge, a couple reads as a silhouette with the whole basin behind them.

The indoor half

Once you move inside for dinner and dancing, the room takes over: warm lamps, string lights and a lot of glass. We work fast lenses and add light sparingly so the pictures still look like the evening felt.

After dark, go back out

Ten minutes on the terrace once the city is lit gives you a completely different set of portraits from the ones you took at sunset. We build that stop into every timeline here.

Book the drive into the schedule. The approach road is slower than the map thinks it is, and it is the single most common reason a Castaway timeline slips.

REAL WEDDINGS HERE

Two full galleries,start to finish.

We have photographed at Castaway more than once, and both days are published in full rather than trimmed to a highlight reel. If you are deciding whether the venue suits how you want to be photographed, these are more useful than any single frame.

That second pairing is worth noting on its own: Castaway works well as a reception-only venue when the ceremony happens at a church down the hill. The drive up becomes part of the day rather than a problem in the timeline.

QUESTIONS

Before you tour it.

When is the best time for a ceremony at Castaway?

Work backwards from sunset. An outdoor ceremony that finishes 60 to 90 minutes before dusk gives you cocktails in warm light and a proper portrait window on the terrace before dinner. In midsummer that means a later start than couples expect.

Can we have the ceremony and reception both on site?

Yes. The venue lists outdoor ceremony spaces alongside its banquet rooms. Plenty of couples also use it for the reception only after a church ceremony elsewhere in Burbank or Glendale — we have photographed it both ways.

What happens if the weather turns?

The indoor rooms carry the evening comfortably, and the view still reads through the glass. We plan a wet-weather portrait position on the walkthrough so nobody is improvising in a drizzle.

Are night portraits with the city lights possible?

Yes, and they are one of the best reasons to book this venue. Ten minutes on the terrace after dark, once the valley is lit, gives you a completely different set of pictures from the sunset ones.

How long should we allow for the drive up?

Longer than the map suggests. The access road is narrow and slow, and guests unfamiliar with it will arrive later than you expect. Pad the ceremony start.
