What Is a Roka?

The roka (sometimes called a rokna) marks the official commitment between two families before the engagement and wedding. Traditionally it signifies that the search for a partner has stopped. Families exchange gifts, sweets, and blessings, and the couple often receives a tilak and tokens of the families acceptance. It is usually an intimate gathering of close family.
