About the venue

One of the last big garden estates left in Orange County

The Turnip Rose has been family-owned for more than 45 years, and the Promenade and Gardens is the larger of its properties: manicured lawns, mature trees and a rock garden laid out with a deliberate stillness, wrapped around a Mediterranean building with slate floors and glass walls. Only one event is booked a day, so the whole estate belongs to you for the afternoon.

What we learned photographing here

We photographed a wedding at the Promenade and Gardens in February 2023. Winter is an underrated time to shoot here: the gardens still read green, the low sun rakes across the promenade instead of falling straight down onto it, and the ceremony package gives you access two hours before guests arrive, which is the single most useful thing this venue offers a photographer. Use it.

Good to know before you book

  • One event a day, so the estate is exclusively yours.
  • Catering and bar are in-house only. An outside cake is allowed.
  • A day-of coordinator from the venue is required, listed at around 875 dollars.
  • Outdoor events carry a 125-guest minimum plus a per-person rental charge.
  • Packages run five hours for a reception, six with a ceremony.
  • Amplified music is fine indoors and out. A 1:00 AM music cutoff is widely reported but not published by the venue, so get it in writing.
  • Free on-site parking for around 350 cars.
  • Wheelchair accessible, pet friendly, with smoking limited to designated areas.
  • The ceremony package includes access two hours ahead for photographs.

Where we like to shoot

  • The Mediterranean archway on the ceremony promenade, which frames a couple cleanly from either side.
  • The rose garden and gazebo, and the same spot again after dark once the overhead lights are on.
  • The manicured gardens on the north side of the property, the most reliably soft light on the estate.
  • The stone patio areas for the loose in-between coverage during cocktail hour.
  • The grand entrance to the ballroom, where the glass gives you a bright interior frame without flash.
The spaces

Ballroom, rose garden, and a lawn that takes a crowd

Champagne Ballroom

The indoor reception room, taking up to 240 seated, or 220 once a dance floor goes in. Slate underfoot, floor-to-ceiling glass out to the gardens, and a foyer in front of it for the pre-function hour.

Rose Garden and gazebo

The usual ceremony site, strung with overhead lights for evening receptions. Sources disagree on its capacity, quoting anywhere from 240 seated to 500 standing, which most likely reflects the difference between a seated ceremony and a standing reception.

Grand Park

The open lawn, and the reason the venue can quote 750 guests or more across the combined outdoor spaces. If you are planning a large South Asian or multi-day celebration in Orange County, this is one of the few sites that can genuinely hold it.
