Founder Jim Carter purchased the land in 1981, and the winery itself was established in the mid-1990s, reportedly inspired by the film “A Walk in the Clouds.” South Coast has since been named California State Winery of the Year five times and holds more than 3,500 wine awards — 2026 marks its 25th anniversary.
The Rose Arbor, wrapped in climbing roses with mountain views behind it, is the resort’s signature ceremony site. The Sunken Courtyard offers a grand staircase for a ceremony or reception, the Grand Ballroom opens through French doors onto a bougainvillea patio, and the Barrel Room gives receptions a rustic, wine-cellar backdrop. On-site lodging — 50 guest rooms plus 82 vineyard villas — means the ceremony, reception, and guest rooms can all sit within a short walk of each other.

With no covered outdoor backup space on-site, weather planning is part of every timeline we build here.
Good to know before you book
- There’s no covered outdoor backup space, so a weather contingency plan matters
- Music ends at midnight; outdoor events wrap by 10pm
- Confetti, glitter, sparklers, rice, and birdseed are all prohibited
