Noguchi Garden
California Scenario
A sculpture garden behind South Coast Plaza, free, open until midnight, and the cleanest backdrop in Orange County
1.6 acres,designed as six landscapes.
California Scenario — almost always called the Noguchi Garden — was commissioned by Henry Segerstrom in 1979 and completed by the sculptor Isamu Noguchi in 1982. It occupies 1.6 acres at 611 Anton Boulevard in Costa Mesa, tucked behind South Coast Plaza between two office towers.
Noguchi built it as six distinct landscapes in one enclosure: Forest Walk, Land Use, Desert Land, Water Source, Water Use and the Energy Fountain. At the centre sits The Spirit of the Lima Bean, fifteen rust-coloured granite rocks fitted together as one form — a nod to the Segerstrom family’s farming history.
It is free and open to the public from 8am until midnight, with parking in the Avenue of the Arts structure. That combination — sculptural, walled, uncrowded and open late — is why photographers keep coming back to it.
Hard stone, hard light, and no clutter anywhere.
Use the geometry
Flat sandstone paving, straight walls and isolated sculptural forms mean a couple reads as the only soft thing in the frame. Wide and graphic works better here than tight and pretty.
The walls are the background
The pale stone walls take colour beautifully at either end of the day and give you a clean, modern backdrop with no signage, no cars and no crowd behind it.
Watch the midday contrast
The plaza is open and reflective. Between about 11 and 3 the stone throws hard light straight back up, so we shoot early, late, or in the shade of the Forest Walk.
Open until midnight
Very few public locations in Orange County let you photograph at 10pm. The garden lit after dark is a genuinely different session, and almost nobody books it.
It is a public garden on private commercial land, not an event venue. For a ceremony rather than a portrait session, contact South Coast Plaza’s management about what is permitted before you plan around it.

California Scenario, Costa Mesa.
Before you plan a session.
Where is the Noguchi Garden?
611 Anton Boulevard, Costa Mesa, at South Coast Plaza. Parking is in the Avenue of the Arts structure.
Is there a fee to visit?
No. California Scenario is free and open to the public from 8am until midnight.
Can you get married there?
It is a publicly accessible sculpture garden rather than a hire venue. Couples use it for engagement sessions, elopement portraits and post-ceremony pictures. For an actual ceremony, ask South Coast Plaza management first.
When is the best light?
Early morning or the last hour before sunset. The paving is pale and reflective, so the middle of the day is the hardest. The garden also stays open late, which makes an after-dark session possible.
How long does a session take?
Thirty to forty-five minutes covers the whole garden comfortably, including the Forest Walk, the stone plaza and the Lima Bean.
